Cyber Bullies
Cyber-bullying has affected every student whether they are the victim, friend of the victim, or the bully. Latest assessments from a national survey taken by i-Safe America showed that more than 1500 students, ranging from fourth to eighth grade across the country show that:
•58% of kids admit someone has said mean or hurtful things to them online
•53% of kids admit having said something mean or hurtful things to another online
•42% of kids have been bullied while online
The tradition of home as a refuge from playground bullies is over. The Internet is the new playground, and there are no off hours. The popularity of instant messaging, e-mail, web-pages, and blogging means kids are a target 24/7.

Cyber Bullying is a huge concern today in society. So many kids find it easier to stick up for themselves and speak their minds over the computer. It is easier for them to say things and do things that they could not or would not say face to face.

I really feel that there is a social disconnect when the interaction is done over the computer or through text messaging. There is no place for human emotion. this is why students really say and do whatever they want on the internet. we need to start teaching responsible and acceptable use within the scope of using technology-both in and out of school.
Here is a link that I found interesting and helpful for the battle to help students and children how cyber bullying can effect other students and why we need to stop it.

Those statistics are mind blowing! Students are more likely to be bullied by their peers than online predators. Jen is right...students will speak their minds and defend themselves through the computer because there is no face to face contact. Teachers, parents, and students need to be educated on Internet safety.
Wow! Shari and Jen are right. What a scary thing to think of. Seeing those statistics and reading about the effects of them in the media makes you fear for both the children you teach as well as your own.
